This was A15, they've changed farming like 3 times since then :)
So I don't need water anymore right
I'm new to the game and I haven't found a human turd is something wrong with me

So we're going to up end the pooping system just for the farming system what's happening to America

This is in Alpha 15. Farming doesn't work like it did in this video anymore.
Old vid, but I gotta ask... I have a base in the ashy biome place, will you be able to farm on that kind of land?
How do you turn coffee into seeds?
I don't think it's very logical o use rotten flesh in a fertilizer lmao
Thank you this video helped me solve my farming problem.
Do you have to reapply fertilizer after you harvest?
Iv been seeing people have there farm on top of there base how do u put dirt down
is this for console or pc?
innCidiousVor 2 years
@Capp00 sweet, i thought they got rid of the fertilizer for the living off the land perk.
Needs revisiting for Alpha 17.
So I have a question we built at the lake house, the one in the middle of the water. Well we built into that and we're wanting to see if you could build a farm on the wood blocks like add dirt and stuff? If so how do you do it?
Who else just plant yucca fruit.... Since it's the easiest!
What if i want to make a vertical farm? the crop wont get enough sun light?
I am confused. I have a concrete roof on my base. How can I put dirt on it?
Does crops get destroy by zombies walking across them, and do animals eat your crop
Capp00 Vor 3 years
No, none of the AI affect crops anymore. They used to, and it was a huge pain.
human turds lol! what about zombie turds
So, 1 fertilizer to 1 tilled land? No need to double fert it?
Thanks a lot man this was literally the shortest and most informative video I could find great job

That I don't know. According to the wiki, there is not enough information to figure that out. lol

Like number 1000! Thanks for the video, I started playing again yesterday with some friends after years without touching the game. This was pretty helpful.

Wow. Thank you very much!
Is there any way to put dirt on a roof, till and fertilize it, and have a farm worth having? Only thing I can manage is planting seeds I find in placed sod, which works like untilled earth.
Gudder GamesVor 3 years
Capp00 I think you linked the wrong video, because I didn't ask how to find fertilizer. But I went to your page and saw a video about farming anywhere. I'll check it out.
Capp00 Vor 3 years
Funny you should ask, since the video I did last week covered that :)

So what about sod I thought sod grew better
I don't know if this is a glitch or bug, but my hoe seems to shovel the dirt, as in digs it out, leaving a space, and when I till again to lay fertilizer, it just digs twice. I'm playing on a ps4, Navisgane map, holding the R2 button and using a hoe. Please help :(

Yes, you can lay down dirt on most anything.

Capp00, I live in the desert, is there a way to farm in the desert, such as placing regular dirt over the sand? I realized I cannot till the sand.
Capp00 Vor 3 years +1
Thank you sir!
Tip you can find crop on the ground and hoe the ground before picking it to get the better yield
Do I have to KEEP fertilizing each time I plant seeds, or does fertilizing once take care of the ground? fertilizing yucca is a joke. In the REAL world yucca will almost grow on pavement. I know this because I live where yucca/Spanish daggers grow.
Capp00 Vor 3 years
I don't believe so, no.
Can zombies damage farms?

I don't get it. Why adding information to the rotting flesh, that you can make fertilizer in a cement mixer if there is no fertilizer in a game?
(I'm a console player)
Great video

What about mushrooms?
since farming is still essentially the same, still good info, i do want to point out that crop rotation is not as you describe it, and far as i know, not neccessary. minecraft's Terrafirmacraft actually did some crop rotation needs, basically all the seeds have a "nutrient" A, B, or C and would deplete the majority of that nutrient in a growing season. so it behooves you to plant a different nutrient loving plant in the slot every year so they always have enough nutrients to grow. this is one of the reasons it's done in the Real world. others involve pests, and diseases. but nutrient balance is important too.
What is even the point of haveing it being able to be placed on grass?....can you find just seeds? if so the dirt for a 1 time grow is ok
hey. playing ps4. how do I find potatoes and where?
Bruh I'm dead "Make sure you pick it up by the dry end" I'm dead
I am pretty sure that corn and cotton yield 3:1 on tilled soil and 5:1 on fertilized soil. Those two items I never use fertilizer for. I save the fertilizer for mushrooms, hops and anything else that I am short on. Mushroom takes 4 times as long as other crops to mature.
If you plant with the fertilizer when you collect and want to plant again you have to fertilize the land again or is it an one time only thing? Also, does this method do anything to trees? Im kinda new to the game so sorry if that is a stupid question.
Mark BlanceVor 3 years +1
Fertilizer seems to be one time only thing.
The fertilizing of the ground can be complicate if you are trying for max fertilizer in the ground. It illuminates the 3-4 and makes it always produce 4 but, it's not easy and here's why. The ground isn't made of blocks but, small triangles to produce the diamond and angular shapes of the ground/ dirt/ rocks. To reach max fertility you have to till with fertilizer in every little triangle. I achieve this to the best of my ability by using small circular motion while tilling in front of me with fertilizer. Once I am done I go back over the entire crop a second time to be sure. After you get really familiar with fertilizing you will kind of be able to see where you missed by the shapes and brightness of the white fertilizer patches. It helps if the ground you pick is as flat as possible. Happy farming!
Hi i have a question. How many times can you use the fertilizer? Do you have to fertilize the ground again after growing something or can you keep using it after fertilizing it one time(
Capp00 Vor 4 years +6
I haven't seen a limit to using it myself. Fertilize it once and just re-use it over and over.
Mushrooms take the longest
I was wanting to place a most 2 blocks high 3 blocks wide around my base how do get the water to stack 2 high any help please
How does fertilizer work? Does it only work on the one block you put it on or the surrounding blocks as well?
Capp00 Vor 4 years
It fertilizes the block you place it on.
A few corrections and additions if I may.
Corn is a special case. For most plants what you say around 1:50 is correct (1:1 in soil, 1:2 in tilled land, 1:3 with fertilizer), corn yields 1:1, 1:3, 1:5. This is not really an oversight, considering that yes, you need as much potatoes as you need corn in the stew, but you also need corn for the grain alcohol.
Since fertilizer is valuable (mostly because you usually would want to use the precious nitrate in gunpowder instead, certainly not for the rotting flesh...) you probably want to salvage as much as you can when you have to move and used fertilizer on your field. If you move, dig up the earth that you used fertilizer on, you get about 1/3 of what you used back that way.
As of A16, it's a known bug that harvesting may cause the game to lag. We've taken a lengthy look into it and it seems to have something to do with server load (harvesting, for some odd reason, seems to put some serious stress on the server). If you experience lag or if your buddies raiding the town complain about lag when you harvest your crops, harvest slower. That allows the server to stay in sync. You can determine the speed by listening whether you hear the "you harvest something" sound. If you don't hear it, stop for a few seconds. We also noticed that it seems to put less stress on the server for some obscure reason if we till the ground like you did there, with an untilled row between the tilled ones, instead of creating blocks of fields.

Great videos by the way, subbed and all. Keep 'em coming, very informative stuff!

Always ok with someone correcting me. In my defense, this is an older video so they did change the way some things were done with farming.
But thank you for providing updates :)
Dose biome mater? Will it work in the snow place?
Mark BlanceVor 3 years
I think the top level of the snow biome is snow, so you may need to bring in dirt. I want to test the rest of this though.
Stephen BradingVor 3 years
I believe snow kills everything except for blueberries. I had a farm and it was Day 5 and I was doing great on food and it started snowing and everything stopped growing
Capp00 Vor 4 years
Yes it does matter for the most part. Some things can grow in snow, others can't.
Despite pulling it out from sand should I assume yucca won't grow from sand?

I can not figure this out on xbox one, driving me crazy. Last update was fine but can till or use fertilizer
How i put the Fertelyser in the Ground ??
Capp00 Vor 4 years +1

Hi, a little question. Say I pick up some dirt, make some sort of ground and place it on a rooftop somewhere to make a sort of roofgarden. If I don't use fertilizer, can I grow plants on the same spot every time? I remember in alpha 14 I think, my plants would disappear and I needed to use fertilizer anyway.
Capp00 Vor 4 years +1
Yes, you don't have to have fertilizer, just makes it grow better.
I know this video is a little bit older, but I'm having a problem where it won't allow me to make fertilizer in a campfire. I have all the required materials, along with the beaker, yet there is no button to "cook" or "craft" or even "favorite" like there is for everything else. I'm pretty new to the game, so sorry if it's a stupid question lol.
LeReaperVor 4 years
Nope, I looked at it in a campfire, but the problem has seemed to of resolved itself. Thank you for the reply though, much appreciated! And also thanks for your amazingly helpful videos! :D
Capp00 Vor 4 years
Did you look in a workbench?
So what about the type of dirt? I've been using sod, because it has more durability, and I figure that means it's just plain *better* but I don't know if the other types like Plains Ground, Grassy Ground, Forest Ground, or even Burnt Forest Ground would have different grow times or what ever.
Also, wouldn't the Cement Mixer method be much better, since there's always more rotten flesh than the rare Human Turd that you almost *never* find?
Thanks!
Capp00 Vor 4 years
Sod is better of course, but any dirt will work if you till it and get it ready for planting.
no need water ?!

You mentioned crop rotation and how it is not quite as important in game is real life. What were you referring to? Is it important to rotate crops in game or not at all?
Capp00 Vor 4 years +1
It's not important at all in game. I didn't mean "crop rotation", was a mis-speak. I meant the concept of planting, harvesting and then replanting in the same location.
Bro.. these are the tutorial videos I've been looking for. Great stuff!
Capp00 Vor 4 years +3
Glad to hear it. Thank You :)
Only one thing in the video bothered me a little. You used the term crop rotation very inaccurately. Other than that solid video.

A valid criticism. Thank you. Not sure why I worded it that way. Made sense at the time lol.
